Hugh was born in Essex where his early years were spend exploring the creeks and salt marshes and a love of the natural world was nurtured.
After war service in Norway he spent many years recording on film the bird and plant life of the Lower Artic regions during which he lived for a year with a family of Nomadic Lapps.
Returning to England in 1974 he settled in a small cottage on the edge of the Blickling Estate where he was able to spend his days filming, painting and writing about the birds and wildlife of the Norfolk and Suffolk coast and countryside.
