Batak

The Batak probably migrated from the Philippines and Borneo to the highlands of North Sumatra about three to four thousand years ago. According to Toba legends, Si Raja Batak, the (mythical) ancestor of all Batak, descended on Gunung Pusuk Buhit ("Central Hill Mountain") west of Lake Toba. Linguistic patterns do not confirm this, however.

According to sources, the name Batak is an insulting nickname given to them by the Muslims in the coastal areas. It seems to have been a widespread epithet for pagan highland peoples of Southeast Asia. In the Philippines, an unrelated mountain people bear the same name and another highland people in Malaysia is called Batek.

All Batak are patrilineal and divided into clans (marga) that in theory can each be traced back to a single ancestor via the male line. People always marry outside their own clan (exogamous).
