Woerden 1880-1946 Laren (NH) Cornelis Vreedenburgh was largely self-taught. Initially he worked as a house painter and drew and painted in his spare time, until in 1904 he was able to devote himself entirely to painting thanks to a royal grant. He benefited greatly from the advice of WB Tholen, who often took him on his boat across the Kaag and the Loosdrechtse Plassen. The meadow and water scenes that Vreedenburgh painted were immediately popular because of their strong colors and the striking way in which he was able to represent the light and atmosphere of the Dutch landscape. In 1918 the painter settled in Laren. From that time on, many Amsterdam cityscapes were created.
