Daniel BEEN (Rotterdam 1885 - Baarn 1967)
At the time, one of the many painters who chose Baarn as their residence was the painter Daniel Been, who was born in Rotterdam in 1885. As a child he always liked to draw and when he got older he had only one wish: to become a painter! His father did not like that and found an office job more suitable for him, because steady work and a regular income is much better, isn't it? Daniel must have thought otherwise, but obeyed. He came to work as an apprentice bookkeeper at the firm Weduwe van Nelle in Rotterdam. He didn't work there very long because he didn't feel happy there. After this short office job, he became a student at the Academy of Fine Arts in Rotterdam. Here he gathered the knowledge that he could use later as a painter. Like a true Rotterdammer, he painted many pieces of the harbours. He made flower arrangements, bought the necessary flowers from a florist and made the paintings of these pieces in his studio. He has mainly made oil paintings in large and small sizes, but also watercolors and pastels. What he painted was in a naturalistic style, a style that will continue to be popular among the art-loving public.
