Dirk Jan Koets was born in 1895 in Wissenkerke on Noord-Beveland. In 1905 his parents moved to Gouda. Koets trained there as a pottery painter. In September 1912, the young Koets left for the United States. He stayed there with family in Sparta, Michigan. Because he was called up for military service due to the outbreak of the First World War and the general mobilization that followed, he returned to the Netherlands in September 1915. After the end of the First World War and the demobilization in October 1919, Koets begins his artistic career.
