(Steenwijk 1919 - Houses 1934)
ESKAf is the abbreviation for the Eerste Steenwijker Kunst-Aterewerk Fabriek, which was founded by residents of Steenwijk in 1919 to stimulate the industry and make well-designed products. Mainly cast and glazed decorative pottery and tiles were produced. From the 1920s, pottery was also added to the range. Hildo Krop is one of the most famous artists who collaborated with the ESKAF. His style is closest to the method of the Amsterdam School. In Steenwijk, the ESKAF produced stylistically very diverse objects.
In the 1920s the factory suffered heavy losses, so it was closed in 1927. The entire inventory, including molds and recipes, was taken over for P. van Stam and H. Hamming and shipped to Huizen. Production was restarted there under the same name. The religiously based ideology of the new leadership was reflected in the management: employees were given a lot of participation and the aim was to pay all employees the same wage. Despite the success of the factory, ESKAF also faced financial difficulties in the 1930s and went bankrupt in 1934. The inventory and the building were taken over by Hamming for Kunstaardewerkfabriek HAHO. Potterie De Driehoek also originated from the ESKAF.
