Franz DEUTMANN (Zwolle 1867 - Blaricum 1917)
Franz Deutmann was a Dutch painter whose work belonged to the Larensche School. He was the son of photographer Franz Wilhelm Heinrich Deutmann (1840-1906) and the brother of Herman Deutmann (1870-1926), also a leading photographer. He was apprenticed as a painter to Jan Derk Huibers and then studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp, under Karel Verlat. In 1891 he returned to Amsterdam. In 1903 Deutmann settled in Laren. His palette became significantly lighter and his painting style more lively, especially in his figure pieces and portraits. However, a sad melancholy continued to resound in the Laren interiors he painted. In his later years, psychological difficulties forced him to continue working in his studio, where he mainly made a number of flower still lifes. Deutmann was a member of Arti et Amicitiae and Sint Lucas Artists Association. His work can be seen in Teylers Museum in Haarlem and the Singer Museum in Laren, among others.
