George Hendrik BREITNER (Rotterdam 1857 - Amsterdam 1923)
George Breitner was a Dutch painter who was known for his Amsterdam cityscapes and can be seen as an impressionist. He was educated at the Academy of Fine Arts in The Hague, where he was also trained by Willem Maris, one of the painters of the Hague School. Breitner's early works therefore fall under this style. Later he moved to Amsterdam with, among others, Isaac Israels, where they painted the bustling city life in an impressionistic style. This distinguished them from the Hague School, which mainly focused on landscapes. Breitner is known as a painter of ordinary people, he mainly painted the lower classes of the population, such as housewives, dock workers and prostitutes. Breitner's works are sketchy in behavior, with many light streaks, and were labeled as 'unfinished' by some other painters. Breitner, however, clearly gave an impression of a moment. However, he also sometimes gave a distorted picture of reality by omitting certain elements from a street scene, or adding elements. Works by Breitner can be seen in the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam and the Gemeentemuseum in The Hague, among others.
