GILBERT & GEORGE
Performers, photographers
Gilbert Proesch born on September 17, 1943 in San Martin de Tor
George Passmore born on January 8, 1942 in Plymouth
Education:
Both artists studied at the St. Martins School of Art (now Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design) in London, where they also got to know themselves.
Living and working in England and Italy
After Gilbert & George got to know each other during their studies, they formed the artist duo here. The reason was that George was the only one who could understand Gilbert's English. What started it all for the duo was Singing Sculptures in 1969. They set themselves up as singing statues. Several other works followed. After this earlier work, they started working on photomontages that had a lot to do with stained glass. However, they were not always 'normal' images, but often shocking things such as blood and vomit.
Life and death play an important role in the work of Gilbert & George and are therefore often recurring. Although Gilbert & George mainly distribute work through the traditional means, in 2007 they distributed a work via the internet.
