Date of birth/ place: 1942, Nederhorst den Berg Education: 1965 – 1968 Leeuwenburgh Academy, Amsterdam 1974 – 1979 Academy of Visual Arts, Rotterdam Brief explanation: “Landscape as imagination” Hendrik van Veenendaal (1942, Nederhorst den Berg) is a landscape painter. Pre-eminently and from a targeted personal choice. Does this mean that he is absorbed in the surrounding nature or that he actually bends nature to his will? Or does he treat man and nature in a changing game, in a division of roles, as this has been recorded on the canvas for centuries since the landscape became an independent theme in painting? Anyone who sees Hendrik van Veenendaal's landscapes knows that he is not concerned with a naturalistic representation. He regularly draws from nature; things happen there that you can't imagine. But by omitting what is recognizable, he gives the landscape back its freedom and turns it into an event. Fiery forces can gather, there can be threats or a liberating light can appear. The work leaves room for chance and improvisation. In the oil paints, after a loose sketch - the fine splashes are still a reminder - a few light-dark parts form the basis for the composition. Layer by layer Van Veenendaal then applies glazed spots of color, which are then scraped off the canvas. In this way, clear, transparent shapes make their way across the image plane. The paintings look as if they were created effortlessly, full of movement and natural tension. At the same time, they come across as a tightly built composition in which the nuanced touches of paint go hand in hand with rhythmic, passionate lines. The smaller watercolors show the same theme in a different technique. Speed is also to be found here, captured for a moment in broad color keys. The urge for clarity is apparent from the perfect transparency of the color areas, which gain in tension due to the contrasting dark accents. In all his work, Van Veenendaal gives space to the changing faces of the landscape. However, the forces with which he charges his compositions do not only reflect the dynamics of nature. They also depict a range of moods that directly affect the viewer. Exhibitions: At home and abroad.
