herman de vries (Alkmaar 1931)
He spells his name without capital letters to "avoid hierarchies", so we do the same here.
de vries studied at the national horticultural school in Hoorn. From 1969, after resigning from a job in agricultural research, he devoted himself entirely to artistry. In his visual work, de vries always strives to banish the personal by isolating and presenting a part of objective reality. Inspired by his agricultural research, he started producing so-called “random objectivations”, in which colored areas, blocks, etc. were randomly assigned. Later he called in nature itself for this objectification process. These objects from nature, but also photos and names written on paper of present or extinct plants and photos always characterize a place, country, area, field of view or time span. Although the disturbed relationship between Western man and nature is central, he does not impose any personal views on the viewer. His work can be found in the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, the Gemeentemuseum The Hague, the Rijksmuseum Kröller Möller, the Literary Museum The Hague, Van Abbe Museum Eindhoven, as well as in many foreign public collections.
