Jacques DOUCET
Painter, Graphic artist
Born in Boulonge sur Seine, France in 1924. Died in Paris in 1994.
Education: Unknown France
Personal experiences have had a major influence on Doucet's work. During the war, Jacques Doucet was imprisoned by the Nazis on charges of terrorist activity. In his cell, he was struck by the graffiti on the walls. He saw the awkwardness and the innocence that spoke. After the liberation, Doucet joined the Cobra movement, a group of artists spread across Europe, who pursued uncensored spontaneity in their work. Among them are the Dutch painters Appel, Corneille and Lucebert and the Belgian Alechinsky. The bright, powerful use of color is one of the characteristic similarities between the work of these artists. Doucet translated the graffiti, which fascinated him so much during his imprisonment, in his own way and created his own territory within abstract expressionism. Painting is a struggle for Jacques Doucet; the search for balance between opposing forces. Construction and demolition are necessary opposites, just like the dynamics of interacting colours, shapes and structures fight for attention. Various emotions can be recognized in the movement of the brush; tender, rough, powerful and refined, Doucet puts his story on paper. What is not immediately noticeable, but gradually, is that Jacques Doucet does not exaggerate himself anywhere. He does not go beyond the boundaries of the paper, an order of the elements prevails on the sheet, a balanced hierarchy. Doucet is out for reconciliation, once you see this you will taste a subtle, even lyrical nature in the fight.
Belongs to the following movements/groups: CoBrA
