JEANNE WESSELIUS (1931 – 2010, Amsterdam)
Jeanne and Jacques Wesselius, who lived and worked in the Rivierenbuurt in Amsterdam, both left behind a studio full of art. Jeanne Wesselius' favorite subjects were nature and music, depicted in the techniques of oil paint, acrylic, watercolor and ink. She was often in Artis drawing and photographing. She preferred to paint some chunky, funny animals, such as cows and geese. She liked to draw musicians during concerts. Jeanne had a gift – sometimes with just a few strokes of the pen – to place people and animals very accurately and to match their movements perfectly.
In addition to being a visual artist, Jeanne Wesselius was also a poet. She won the Pipistrellus Prize in 2000 and the Plantage Poetry Prize in 2002. She has four collections of poetry to her name.
On February 10, 2013, a posthumous retrospective devoted to the work of this couple opened its doors in the Oranjekerk in Amsterdam.
