Lega

LEGA

The Lega tribe are originally from Uganda but have settled in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The tribe operates on a class system (Bwami), and the artifacts they produce may only be used by the class for which they are intended. Objects of everyday material, such as wood, are used by the lower classes, ivory objects by the upper classes. Lega masks are normally identified by a heart-shaped face, slightly protruding forehead, slit eyes and a slightly open mouth. After each use, the object is smeared with white clay, ultimately creating a white patina on the object.
