Nan Goldin (1953)

Nan GOLDIN

Goldin was born in Washington and grew up in a Boston suburb, in a middle-class family with Jewish parents. In 1968, at the age of fifteen, she received an introduction to photography from a teacher. In 1973 she had her first solo exhibition in Boston. She showed photos of her visits to the gay and transgender communities in the city, to which her friend David Armstrong had introduced her. In 1977-78 Goldin graduated from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston/Tufts University, where she had worked primarily with Cibachrome prints.

After her studies Goldin moved to New York. She documented the music scenes of post-punk and new wave, and the LGBT subculture of the late 1970s and early 1980s, which had become very lively after the Stonewall riots.
