Paul Matthias Padua (1903-1981)
Paul Matthias Padua (1903-1981), German self-taught and successful artist. Influenced by Wilhelm Leibl, while his later work was marked by the Neue Sachlichkeit. In 1922 Padua became a member of the M_nchner K_nstlervereinigung. After that, his works were regularly exhibited. He won the Georg-Schicht-Preis and in 1930 he was awarded the Albrecht-D_rer-Preis of the city of N_rnberg. From 1930 his fame increased and he undertook numerous trips in Europe with various exhibitions. Became known for the virtuoso coloration of his painted still lifes, portraits and female nudes. Among those portrayed were Franz Leh_r and Otto Hahn. After being appointed as a war artist for a short time during the Second World War, Padua emigrated to Austria. In 1951 he returned to Germany where he opened his own gallery at the Tegernseer Tal, ?Galerie am See?. He again became an important German portrait painter. Herbert von Karajan and Franz Josef Strauss, among others, were models for him.
