Peter LEYENAAR (Breukelen-Saint Pieters 1923)
Peter Leyenaar taught for many years at the Studio School in Amsterdam, of which he was the owner and director. Only at a later age did he find the time to make sculptures. Anyone who sees his elongated figures first thinks of Alberto Giacometti. With his vulnerable, elongated characters, this artist depicted the existential loneliness of man. But the relationship is only based on form. Leijenaar is not interested in emphasizing the miserable condition of man. He wants to portray the search for affection and intimacy in his images. This is apparent from the titles of his sculptures alone: 'Reunification', 'Intimacy', 'Leunen', 'Carried on Hands'. His characters lean towards each other, seek each other out, even if the outcome is uncertain. The stylized bodies without arms are also excellent for a linear interplay of shapes in space. The combination of abstract and expressive qualities gives Peter Leijenaar's sculptures a lasting appeal.
