Rotterdam 1840-1929 The HagueThe painter Pieter Adrianus Schipperus was born on March 6, 1840 in Rotterdam. He lived and worked there and since 1910 in The Hague, where he died on October 4, 1929. He was self-taught. Schipperus was initially going to become an art dealer, but a grant from King Willem III enabled him to make painting his profession. He started painting romantic landscapes and sea and river views, mostly in the vicinity of Haarlem and Limburg. . In 1910 he settled in The Hague, after which he gathered a lot of material for his paintings in and around Rotterdam. Schipperus was a clever watercolourist. Only at a later age he also started painting in oil and became proficient in etching and lithography. He is known, among other things, as a painter of forest views and landscapes. His work is represented in many museums. He became a teacher at the Rotterdam Academy of Fine Arts, was a member of various art companies and has exhibited several times.Museums: TeylersMuseum in Haarlem, Museum Boymans-van Beuningen in Rotterdam.
