Potterij Zaalberg (1936)

Pottery ZAALBERG (formerly De Rijn pottery factory)

(Leiderdorp 1936)

In 1918 Herman Zaalberg Sr. set up the De Rijn pottery factory together with D. Nieuwenhuizen. Due to lack of money, all products were produced by hand. The products mainly consisted of flower vases and later also tableware. Son Meindert Zaalberg joined the company at an early age. At that time there was very low sales, which was most likely due to the competition from Amphora in Oegstgeest. De Rijn's plain, simple use of color clashed with the richly decorated pottery of Amphora. Nevertheless, De Rijn survived the crisis through the hard work of father and son. In 1937 the company, which was now called Potterij Zaalberg, was transferred to Meindert. Under his authority, some products seem to be inspired by Chinese pottery art. Where previously attention was focused on utility pottery, this now shifted to decorative pottery. After Meindert's departure, his two sons take over the company. More uniques with freer shapes are being produced. In addition to large and small vases, plastics and wall decorations are also produced. Potterij Zaalberg is, after Mobach, one of the longest existing pottery companies and is currently located on the Hoge Rijndijk.
