Sjaak Kaashoek (1961) Sjaak Kaashoek makes graphics (mainly etchings, but also drypoints and copper engravings) and paintings in oil and acrylic paint. He is inspired by architecture, nature and objects and images from his living environment. He also regularly relies on literary sources. In his work he feels related to the art of the old masters and icon painters, in which 'display' is paramount. He studied from 1981-1986 at the Christian Academy for Visual Art Education (CABK) in Kampen, in the drawing & painting department and from 1984-1986 followed a MO-A drawing course at the Amsterdam School of the Arts. After living and working in Kampen for a long time, he left for Nijmegen in 2009. This change of scenery has given his work a strong impulse, opening up numerous new sources of inspiration. Sjaak Kaashoek makes both free work and commissioned work. He made two murals about the Word and the sacraments for the Reformed congregation of Kampen. "They are modest, not dominantly present and give the space meaning. In the early Christian church, paintings had the same function." For the Frans Walkate Archive he made a special series of high and narrow paintings of a number of striking Kamper alleys.
