In 1765, the glass factory Vannes la Châtel was founded in the Lorraine region. In the first half of the twentieth century, the factory was one of the largest glass producers in France. The factory started with utility glass, but produced decorative glassware from the 1930s. In the 1960s Vannes le Châtel merged with Bayel, Portieux, Vallerysthal and Fains to form the Compagnie Française du Cristal (also known as Daum). Since this merger, Vannes has focused more on the production of crystal glass.
