Biography
Adrie ARENDSMAN (Enschede 1941) was educated at the Academy of Fine Arts AKI in Enschede and graduated in the disciplines: painting, graphics and spatial design. She uses a wide variety of shapes and techniques in her work. This gives her great flexibility in accepting and working out assignments. In the smaller formats of her works, intimacy and poetic thought dominate. The larger works have both glass and bronze as support and are much more monumental with a characteristic layering and depth.

All her works seem to have “youth” and “self-portrait” as themes. The wonder is central. This is apparent from her interest in travel, music, drama and modern literature. Always looking for the essence of herself and the world around her. Time and again and in her own way to express her experience in color and form.
These paintings and ceramic objects could have a “self-portrait” theme. Can have, because of course there are several underlying ideas that the viewer can discover in the work. Childhood has to do with play, with growing up and maturing. The self-portrait is about considering and evaluating and also about putting things into perspective; put things into perspective about how you become a person or about how you become an artist. In this way she makes the viewer a part of her quest and is willing and able to show us the inside of herself as an artist and as a person.
