Sigvard BERNADOTTE (Stockholm 1907 - Stockholm 2002)
Designer Sigvard Bernadotte grew up as a prince within the royal family of Sweden. When he married a woman who was not of nobility in 1934, he lost this title. Bernadotte turned out to be one of the pioneers in Swedish Industrial Design. At a young age he joined Georg Jensen's silver company. The company mainly produced silverware with decorations based on the Arts & Crafts movement. Bernadotte was the first designer within the company to use geometric shapes. Bernadotte set up a studio in Copenhagen in 1950 with Acton Bjorn. They were the first industrial designers to have their own studio in Denmark and were the first to achieve international fame. Within this company they produced, among other things, the Margrethe bowls for Rosti in 1950. These have a non-slip rubber base, a pouring spout and a handle. In 1964 Bernadotte dropped out of the studio and set up his own Design Studio. Well-known designs of his hand are the cutlery 'Bernadotte' from 1939 and the Virrvarr pattern that appears on several objects.
