Founded in 1831
Prior to the establishment of Academie Minerva, a school in Drawing, Construction and Naval Studies was founded by some Groningen residents in 1797. In addition, a society was founded in 1820 for drawing, painting, engraving and architecture. In 1831 the school and the society were forced to merge due to financial problems. This resulted in the Minerva Institute. Many painters of the Groningen painting group De Ploeg studied at the Minerva Academy. The fourth generation of the 'Group of Figurative Abstraction', or The Group, also emerged from the academy. Today Minerva Academy is part of the Hanze University of Applied Sciences Groningen. The academy is a school in the field of visual arts, design and pop culture.
