In 1883 the artists' association Als ik Kan was founded. At that time the association still existed under the name Union Artistique des Jeunes. The initiative was started to give young Antwerp artists the opportunity to exhibit their work in Antwerp, but also in the Netherlands and Germany. In 1952 the association was dissolved.
