Founded in 1952 - dissolved in 1956
The Art Abstrait group was founded with the aim of bringing together artists who were committed to abstraction in art in different ways. The group emerged as a reaction against figurative painting. They hoped for an international breakthrough and artistic innovation. Over the years, two movements developed within Art Abstrait, namely the constructivists and the lyrical abstract painters. The constructivists adhered to a rigid composition while the lyrical abstracts wanted as much freedom as possible. This dichotomy eventually led to the end of Art Abstrait.
