Founded in 1884
The Société des Artistes Indépendants is a society that initially only included French artists. The Société was founded by a group of painters known as Les Indépendants. This group wanted their own salon to be able to exhibit their work, and that of related artists. The salon they wanted to organize was akin to the Salon des Refusés, which had previously been established, which exhibited works that had been refused by the official Paris Salon. The salon of the Société des Artistes Indépendants hiled exhibitions without a jury, so any artist who wanted to submit work was accepted. Since 1950, the Salon des Indépendant has been held in Paris, where innovative works are often shown. About 3000 artists are now affiliated with it.
