Founded in 1869
The Sint Bernulphusgilde was founded in Utrecht to arouse more interest in ecclesiastical art and architecture among clergy. They did this by organizing excursions and publishing a magazine, Het Gildeboek. In the beginning, the guild was exclusively aimed at clergy, but later membership was also opened up to artists and architects. The guild also received members from all over the Netherlands, but the most important was the province of Utrecht because of its major role in designing and building churches. The architectural style in question was a conservative variant of the Gothic Revival. This was aimed at indigenous variants of the late Gothic, and was made almost exclusively in brick.
