The Group of Figurative Abstraction, soon simply called 'The Group', is a movement of the State Academy of Art in Amsterdam. Initially they also called themselves the Amsterdam School. In the end, many of the members moved to Groningen, because of the space. The Group saw an interaction between art and space, they wanted to combine figurative and abstract art. Each member of the group went through its own development in this. From a historical perspective, the Group has been very important as the link between figurative art and abstract art. There were several generations within The Group. Sculpture went through three generations, and painting four. The contact between the members themselves was not structured, and was therefore individual. The Group was not an association with a board or exhibition agreements. That is why there have never been joint exhibitions.
