G58

Groep 1958, or G58, was founded in Antwerp. This was in response to the World Exhibition in 1958, where the Belgian artist felt disadvantaged. The work of G58 artists can be situated between lyrical and geometric abstract art. In the four years that the G58 has existed, many different exhibitions have been organized. Partly as a result of the G58, the artistic center of gravity in Belgium shifted from Brussels to Antwerp. Disagreements soon arise within the group, and in 1960 some members split off and jointly form the New Flemish School.
