November group

The Novembergruppe is named after the German Revolution of 1918 that took place in November. In December of that year, the Novembergruppe was founded. The group initially wanted to reorganize the arts, led by expressionist painters. They hoped to bring the workers into contact with the artists and thus create a new unity. These ideas corresponded to Bauhaus in Germany, which was active during the same period. Within the Novembergruppe, various groups of avant-garde artists soon emerged, spread all over the country. The Novembergruppe was motivated by the expressionist ideology that art and architecture could make the world a better place. The group organized (travelling) exhibitions and donated money to all kinds of artistic initiatives. Finally, the Novembergruppe was banned by the National Socialist government and the group ceased to exist in 1933.
