Ad Arma (Rotterdam, 1954)
Ad Arma was born in Rotterdam (1954) and trained at Artibus, Academy of Fine Arts in Utrecht (1974-1979). Ad Arma is a versatile artist. In addition to his graphic work, he also makes bronze sculptures, gouaches, oil paintings and ceramics. The underlying idea in much of his work is the realization that everything is one, connected. Over the years, new themes have been explored. The thin line between dream and reality, transience, space and insignificance, oblivion. A small selection of the themes that can be found in Ad Arma's work over the years. But more important than the intention that the artist has with his work, he finds the vision of the art viewer. 'The added value, the spirit of the work, is the addition that the viewer will project into the work.' In his workshop in the polder, Ad Arma prefers to work on his new creations in the dead of night. Alone, in his own world of experience. Jazz music sounds as a catalyst and concentration control. Here his ideas come to life, he allows everything. The art is not the omission, but the allowance (then you can always allow the omission). Ad Arma also regularly travels to India and Japan to give seminars to young artists or to gain inspiration himself. During these trips he took Asia to his heart and since then it has taken a major place in his work. Over the years Ad Arma has been able to organize an impressive number of exhibitions and projects, with the provisional highlight being winning the prestigious "Artist of the Year" election in 2007.
