Cheerful painting of a vegetable and flower market (in Bruges?) by the Belgian painter Cesar Geerinck (1862-1919). He belonged to the Bruges School and this market is possibly set in Bruges at the end of the 19th century. The work is in the original frame and is signed by the artist (bottom left).
Geerinck learned the trade of painting from 1870 at the drawing academy in Zele (where he won prizes at the age of 12) and then from 1872 at the art academy in Dendermonde and the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp. After his marriage he lived on one of the canals in Bruges. During the First World War the family fled to The Hague.
He painted cityscapes, not only of Bruges (the beguinage), but also of French cities. He also painted still lifes, interiors, fishing boats, landscapes, dogs and occasionally a portrait. From 1905 he exhibited annually at the exhibition of the Cercle Artistique Brugeois, and from 1911 to 1914 at the exhibition of the Cercle Artistique Ostendais.
Frank Coene wrote a commendable article about the painter “Cesar Geerinck, a forgotten artist” in: Yearbook HOK Zele, 2003.
