Corneille, born Guillaume Cornelis van Beverloo, was a prominent Dutch artist and one of the founders of the CoBrA movement, an avant-garde art group active from 1948 to 1951. The name CoBrA is an acronym referring to the cities of Copenhagen, Brussels and Amsterdam. Corneille was known for his lively, colorful and expressive works that often included elements of nature, animals and female figures.

Corneille had a deep affinity with Cuba, which was a source of inspiration for his art. His travels to the island have had a significant influence on his work. In Cuba he found a rich cultural and visual environment that stimulated his creative imagination.
