Falstaff is an opera buffa in three acts by Giuseppe Verdi, to a libretto by Arrigo Boito, based on Shakespeare's The Merry Wives of Windsor and Henry IV Parts I and II, first performed at La Scala in Milan on 9 February 1893 and at the Opéra-Comique in Paris on 18 April 1894. It was the last opera written by the composer, who was then 80 years old. The plump character inspired a beautiful interpretation by Orson Welles in one of his films.
