Daniel Spoerri 1930 - 2024
Daniel Spoerri was originally a dancer, mime artist and choreographer. Later he became an object artist. He was born in Galati (Romania) and emigrated to Switzerland in 1942, where he trained as a dancer and also practiced this as a profession. In 1959 he moved to Paris. In 1960 he co-founded Nouveau-Realisme. He started his 'tableaux-pièges', in which he fixed objects randomly on their base, such as a table, and declared them to be works of art. Instead of horizontally he set them up vertically. In 1961 he had his first solo exhibition in Milan and he took part in the exhibition 'The Art of Assemblages' in New York. He became famous in 1963 with his Menus-pièges: for twelve days a variety of menus were presented to the public in the Parisian Galerie J. Afterwards he fixed the remains of the meal on the tablecloth and then hung it on the wall as a painting. Later he opened his own restaurant in Düsseldorf with the same system. For him it was really fixing a moment. A snapshot. In 1968 he opened his own 'Eat Art Restaurant' in Düsseldorf.
