Dirk Harting (1884-1970) was almost exclusively a graphic artist and clever etcher.
He also engraved stamps and bookplates, made lithographs and drawings and occasionally watercolors and oil paintings. Harting reached a great height in the Dutch graphic art tradition. His adage was: “I want an etching to be a print and not a disguised painting or the imitation of a watercolor”. His etchings show us the artistry of the craft itself, his personal vision of reality. Harting was awarded the Willink van Collen Prize in 1913 for the etching of the Grimnessersluis in Amsterdam near the Rokin. Five years later he acquired a silver medal from the city of Utrecht for his famous etching of the OLVrouwekerk van de Amerfoorte.
He was a student of Pieter Dupont and Willem Witsen.
