Geert Vrijdag made works in oil paint or chalk, on canvas or paper. His fantastic art is reminiscent of the COBRA movement, but has acquired a style all its own. His captivating colors and compositions are a feast for the eyes. They arise without a preconceived idea, without a figurative intention, and yet we always think we discover something new, something recognizable in them. He himself described looking at his work as 'an encounter with something unknown that wants to be known'. I consider my works as a practical investigation into the roots of inspiration and the visual process. The work is created independently of any figuration, without preconceived idea or image and without devised plans. A meditative basic attitude makes it possible to explore intuitively. Something emerges from that emptiness: something unknown that wants to be known. I record the encounter with that unknown in shape, colour, movement and material. At the same time, it is also a challenge to renounce routine and tradition and requires an openness and willingness to go beyond the visible reality.'
