Information about the artist:
Gerrit Henderik Breetvelt (Leiden,1896 – Zierikzee, 1982), painter and watercolorist.
He was a gifted and fanatical amateur painter. His passion for painting and watercolors took shape during his training as a drawing teacher at the Art Academy in Rotterdam.
From 1920 until his death in 1982, GH Breetvelt lived and worked in Zierikzee (province of Zeeland), where he worked as a teacher, later as a headmaster, at the public primary school in Zierikzee. He is known as an organizer and inspirator of all kinds of social and cultural activities.
From a review: “GH Breetvelt worked with a strong, broad brushstroke and limited himself mainly to main lines. Details were often deliberately omitted or neglected. He was concerned with the big picture and the atmosphere. His work cannot be captured under the label of one particular style or movement. In his way of painting, composition and use of colour he usually comes across as a modern, somewhat impressionistic painter”.
