He was educated in French-speaking Switzerland, in La Rochelle, Bordeaux and Paris and perfected his knowledge of the art of lithography in 1813/14 in Munich under Ferdinand Piloty, Josef Anton Selb, Johann Nepomuk Strixner and Johann Baptist Stuntz before returning to his homeland with lithographic equipment.
