Hannes Postma gained international fame in the sixties with series of large color etchings . Between 1970 and 1978 he made his 'sea paintings'. This led to the Hoek van Hollandse School in 1973. With some former students of the Rotterdam academy he formed an anarchist art group, which aimed to exclude all outside influences (teachers, traditions). After a while everyone went their own way again and Hannes Postma sought connections with the Nieuwe Figuratie.
Striking similarities in the work of painters who are considered to belong to the New Figuration are: the combination of figurative and abstract elements, a tension between the flat surface and the illusion of space, bright use of colour, sharp contours and pop art elements.
Hannes Postma studied at the Rijksacademie in Amsterdam. During the period 1971-1988 he was a teacher at the Academy of Fine Arts in Rotterdam.
