Hans Blanken was trained at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in The Hague and the Free Academy there. He took his time making his etchings, sometimes making three or four a year. The editions were not exceptionally high, but several states of some etchings are known. Many editions of his etchings have completely sold out over the years. Around 2000, Blanken stopped making etchings. His oeuvre consists of about 120 etchings. Themes and subjects in his work refer back to his native region in South Holland, to references in literature and to his stay in Curaçao, but the area around his home in Wanswert also appears in his work.
