A beautiful hand-coloured woodcut of 20.5 x 14 cm visible size within passepartout, framed behind glass in a wooden frame for an external size of 25.5 x 19.3 cm, depicting Christ on the cross surrounded by apostles and the two Marys, mixed with other biblical figures and knights. It is estimated that it was first published in 1514. Signed with monogram HS in the plate, at the bottom of the sword.
Hans Leonhard Schäufelein/ Schäufelin (c. 1480–c. 1540) was a German artist, painter, and woodcut designer. He worked until 1503 as an assistant to Albrecht Dürer (1471–1528), whose work he influenced. Although he occasionally illustrated romances and even produced a deck of cards, Schäufelein is best known for his production of religious themes, including many woodcuts depicting the Crucifixion and its aftermath, including this one used as a title page illustration for Martin Luther's Biblia Germanica (1523).
Condition: Wrinkled, tears and folds in the paper, some loss of color, see photos for a more complete impression.
