Kies belonged to the Vienna School of Fantastic Realism and in 1957/58 was a co-founder of the inner circle of the "Wiener Ars Phantastica" with colleagues such as Ernst Fuchs, Wolfgang Hutter, Anton Lehmden, Arik Brauer and Rudolf Hausner.
Kies studied at the University of Applied Arts in Vienna from 1949 to 1953. His works have been exhibited in numerous solo exhibitions and in important group exhibitions of the Vienna School in Europe, North and South America, Australia, Persia, India, China and Japan. He received several awards and was awarded the professional title of professor in 1983.
