The Market and the Old Town Hall Wijk bij Duurstede
The images that Spilman made of Wijk bij Duurstede (after a drawing by Beijer) are very sought after. This copy is professionally framed.
What is special is that the engravings are over 270 years old and yet still very recognizable, even today. The old Town Hall is a national monument, built in the years 1662-1666. A smaller town hall used to stand on the same spot. The city council was seated here. The bailiff and aldermen also administered justice here. That is why there were cells in the lower house. Important items such as the treasury, city stamps and charters were kept in the building. The Old Town Hall and the Market have withstood the test of time and the Old Town Hall is now ready for its next renovation. In later years, the Old Town Hall served as a town hall. Due to the construction of a new city office on Karel de Grotestraat, the town hall lost its administrative function in 1981. [1] .
Engravings of the Old Town Hall can be found in museum collections, such as the Rijksmuseum [2]
What is unique about this etching is that it was colored by hand - probably in later years.
