Henk Schiffmacher (Harderwijk, March 22, 1952) - tattoo artist, writer, painter, comes from a Catholic butcher's family. From an early age he had a predilection for drawing and collecting. He had little interest in school. He wanted to be a painter. His first sketches and drawings found their way into the homes and bedrooms of aunts and uncles, and Schiffmacher won annual drawing competitions. In the early 1970s, his artistic ambition led to a short period at the REX Advertising School on Frederiksplein in Amsterdam. In the mid-seventies, Schiffmacher worked at De Bijenkorf, in the advertising department that looked after the famous shop windows. After training as an advertising painter, he also took up photography. At noon he often stopped by Tattoo Peter's shop in Sint Olofssteeg, where his fascination for tattooing arose. Schiffmacher is very active in the field of tattoos and collected all kinds of stuff related to the history of the tattoo during his travels. He has tattooed the following people, among others: The members of the Red Hot Chili Peppers - The members of Pearl Jam - Kurt Cobain - Barry Hay - Willy DeVille - Herman Brood and Xandra Jansen - Anouk - Robbie William s - Lady Gaga . On November 5, 2011, the Amsterdam Tattoo Museum opened, the largest tattoo museum in the world and is dedicated to the mother of all arts: the tattoo. The basis is the unique collection that Schiffmacher has amassed over more than thirty years. The collection consists of hundreds of tattoo machines and hand tools, countless photos, flash (tattoo examples), paintings, drawings, statues and even pieces of tattooed skin.
Since December 2019, Henk Schiffmacher and his wife Louise have set up a clothing line called PYF Ink. They are inspired by the history of tattooing and design garments with their own designs.
