Beautiful wood/linocut by Henri Verstijnen with a passpartout of black lacquered wood. The work can be delivered with or without a frame. The cardboard back of the frame is in fair condition. Henri Verstijnen [name variations: Henri Verstynen, Henri Cornelis Gerard Marie Verstijnen, Henri Cornelis Gerard Marie Verstynen; monogrammed as HV (together, placed in a square frame)] was born on July 9, 1882 in Sukabumi and died on January 11, 1940 in Scheveningen. Verstijnen followed an artistic education at the Academy of Visual Arts in Arnhem and was a student of Sieger Baukema, Paul Bodifée, Jacob Hendrik Geerlings and Charles Roskam, among others. Henri was active as an artist in Arnhem, Maastricht, The Hague, Amsterdam (Artis: illustrated 'A day in Artis or A day with a tail as father said', written by Anna Van Gogh-Kaulbach in 1927), Scheveningen, in the historical environment of Bohemia and Teplice (Czech Republic). As a graphic artist/graphic designer, illustrator, advertising designer, political cartoonist, painter and sculptor, he concentrated on animal representations (especially birds) and caricatures. He also made designs from porcelain and glass. He is also known for an animal calendar from the early 1930s (publisher: Felix P. Abrahamson). Verstijnen was a member of Pulchri Studio in The Hague. Anyone who delves into Verstijnen's work will come to know him as a creative jack-of-all-trades, who did not like to limit himself to a specific medium. His imagination, optimism and humor are strongly reflected in his work. Verstijnen was especially loved by the general public as a caricaturist of 'human' animals in the rhymes of Charivarius in De Groene Amsterdammer.
