Herman BROOD (Zwolle 1946 - Amsterdam 2001)
Painter, musician, actor
Course:
Herman Brood went to the Academy of Fine Arts in Arnhem.
Biography.
Herman Brood, known as Rock 'n Roll Junkie, was an all-rounder. A great musical talent, a unique personality and a well-known artist. Herman Brood worked as an artist, as he stood in life, with dedication, fast and without making concessions. He was an admirer/follower of the Cobra movement and in particular of Lucebert and that is especially visible in his drawings, which, like Lucebert, are expressive and caricatural and often somewhat gloomy or cynical.
Herman Brood often worked on large format canvases with paint, spray can, (paint) marker and later also with molds. His work always has a large and clearly present signature. This signature is really part of the work.
Herman Brood worked in his Atelier in Amsterdam, but also a lot outside his Atelier. Well-known are the many drawings on beer mats and sketch sheets, but also works that he made on canvas (vinyl) with spray can.
In 2001 Brood died after a fatal jump from the roof of the Amsterdam Hilton Hotel. After his death, a first retrospective exhibition was organized in 2002 by the Cobra Museum in Amstelveen. In 2007 his studio was exhibited in the Groninger Museum. Brood has left an indelible impression in the Netherlands. Due to his lifestyle, music and art, Brood can be considered one of the most famous Dutch artists of our time.
Herman Brood's work can be found in many museum, corporate and private collections.
