Jacob (Jaap) de Ruig (Baarn, May 10, 1909 - Baarn, August 4, 1992) was often called the 'Eem painter'.
Jacob was married to Maria Christina (Tina) Zobel. He was taught by Van Neijenhuis, Gérard van Wijland and JMJ Bollinger. Jaap lived in Baarn all his life and painted places there such as the Eem, Brink/markt, Laanstraat, Pekingtuin and Groeneveld. He also portrayed hundreds of Baar residents, including the Pierson and Wijsmuller families.
De Ruig took painting lessons with Van Neijenhuis, Gérard van Wijland and JMJ Bolinger. Jaap de Ruig painted (river) landscapes, portraits and (flower) still lifes. He also worked as a sculptor. His style of painting is intuitive, impressionistic, but also realistic.
De Ruig was an art teacher at several schools in Baarn. In his studio 'De Filosoof' at his house at Sumatrastraat 5, he gave drawing and painting lessons to Baarn artists. The painter Jim Frater often came there. Jaap de Ruig exhibited in Baarn, Hilversum and Laren (Hamdorff and Singer).
From approximately 1968 to 1981 he was a member (and later an honorary member) of the Artists' Association Laren-Blaricum. He also became an honorary member of the Association of Visual Artists Baarn and artists' association Hilversum. De Ruig was the founder of the Individual Creative Center in Baarn in 1978.
Jaap de Ruig was buried at the New General Cemetery on Wijkamplaan in Baarn. An image of a painter's palette is depicted on his grave monument.
