Jaap Wagemaker voelde zich 'thuis' in het materieschilderij. Hij kreeg hierin de mogelijkheid om zich geheel bezig te houden met het concrete oppervlak dat zowel in abstracte zin 'beeld' zou zijn, als in realistische zin een bouwsel van voorwerpen. Opvallend voor Wagemaker is het verfoppervlak, de textuur van de toetsen. Na 1955 gebruikt hij dan ook niet alleen meer olieverf, maar mengt hij deze verven met synthetische verven en met fijn zand, gruis en kiezels.
